Women of God, Rise Up!
Is it just me, or do even Christians look at women as less of a deep thinker than men? I don’t know about you, but to me I see women viewed as less intellectual than men are, even in a church setting.
Don’t believe me?
Okay, ladies and gentlemen, I want you to think about walking into a Christian bookstore. Imagine you were just walking around each aisle, and suddenly you are brought into the women’s section of the store. Now, how would you know it is the section reserved for those of us with a uterus? Well, for starters, you will notice that most books are pastel colored, maybe they also have a relaxing garden picture, a picture of coffee, or the ever so cliche person standing in a field arms spread open. Not only that, but you will also notice that these books are geared towards your identity in Christ, being a good spouse/mother, being a good friend etc. You will also notice that in the grand scheme of things, these books are maybe 15-20 tiny chapters at most. However, if you go to a theological section in the store, you will notice that these book are large, dark colors, and, well, typically not appealing to women – hence why we constantly find that 9/10 of these authors, if not all of them, are men.
This is what I am NOT saying.
I am NOT saying that books on our identity in Christ or how to be a better mom/spouse are bad.
I am not saying that pastel colors and cliche pictures on books are bad either.
What I am saying, is that this view that women need these things in order to learn are completely disrespectful to you as a daughter of the most High King Jesus.
Women of God, you were created to know Christ intimately and deeply. You were created not only to nurture, you were created to think.
Go back in history, even recent years and look at the number of women theologians are compared to men. Chances are at MOST, 10% were women and the rest were men.
Why is this an issue in even Christian circles? Men are not the only one’s who can press into issues of theology, philosophy etc. Woman are able to have intelluctual converstaions about the nature of Christ, salvation and all the other issues that come up.
We as CHRISTIANS need to be able to study the bible and think critically about it.
“12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
Crave solid food! Come to know Christ and His word so deeply and so intimately that you no longer stick to the ABC’s of faith, but that you desire the wisdom that comes from Him. We as Christians should be able to respond to questions and issues that people in church talk about. An appeal to an unknown (saying we cannot know) not only misrepresents God, it makes us seem like fools who blindly follow a 2,000 year old dead guy.
Women of God, rise up! You have a voice to speak and you have a brain to think about these things! God did not create men as the only one’s who can grasp/understand theology. We are smart, capable, and driven. This generation needs women who can tackle these issues and think critically!
It’s time for us to rise up.
